OUSD Site Transition Update - 12/4/2015

In early November, the decision was made to postpone the proposed opening of a charter school of the arts for grades 7-12 as well as an arts-focused K-6 school on Oceanside Unified School District's (OUSD) Jefferson campus.

The District has met with leadership of the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) and both sides agree that they are fully committed to a partnership however due to needed environmental reviews, anticipated timeline issues, and enrollment concerns, placing a school of the arts on one of our campuses is no longer a viable option. OCSA is working to amend their current charter application and the District will continue to work with them to help ensure that our kids have access to an arts-focused educational experience in our community.

As has been stated in the past, the current model on Jefferson campus is not sustainable and needs to be reimagined. OUSD will take the remainder of this school year, and all of next school year, to plan for what Jefferson will look like in the 17/18 school year as well as what transitions may look like at Mission and Laurel. As for the 16/17 school year, there will be no changes to the existing school configurations of Jefferson, Mission and Laurel or any of our other campuses.

OUSD looks forward to working with staff, students, families and the community on what kind of experience they would like to see at our schools in the 17/18 school year.

OUSD Site Transition Update - 11/10/2015

On September 22, the Oceanside Unified School District School Board voted to approve a petition to open a charter school of the arts for grades 7-12. As a companion, district administration proposed to open an arts-focused K-6 school. Both schools would be housed on the Jefferson Middle School campus and were anticipated to open in August 2016.

Members of the community have expressed concerns about the possible closing of Jefferson Middle School. Also, in taking preliminary steps towards the facility planning, we have discovered that it would be virtually impossible to complete the needed environmental reviews in time to open the schools in fall of 2016. As a result, the decision has been made to postpone the proposed opening of both schools by a year.

Community Conversations on this subject were scheduled to begin on November 16. These conversations will be rescheduled until we have additional information to share.

We look forward to working with students, parents, staff and the community over the next year on a plan for the transition of the Jefferson campus.
